Building a Workbench For Kids If your kids are interested in working with tools, you definitely should build them their own kids workbench. Most ready-to-assemble workbenches are made for the height and arm reach of average men, and they should not be used by kids. Using these big benches makes kids and short people very uncomfortable. Not only it is uncomfortable, it is also very unsafe. Some people try to compensate this by placing bricks in the front of the bench and have them stand on them, but that is going to make it more unstable and unsafe. Also, it is more likely to hit yourself with a hammer or get sliced by saw (Ouch!!). Kids will have much more fun if they can have their own kids workbench that is made for their size and reach. Their work will be easier and more accurate. Working at an oversized workbench is like expecting a kid wearing adult-sized shoes to run fast without falling down. It is not difficult to make a kid workbench. All you have to do is build a ! workbench with a smaller base and shorter legs so they can reach the end of the bench with ease. Also, it is important that it is short enough for them to use their arms freely.

Thorough plans are needed since building a workbench is not a one day task. It takes some people months or even years to complete one, especially if it's their first workbench. The first thing you need is a detailed reference and instructions on how to build workbenches. They can be easily found on the web, books or magazines. After you get your basic design and plans for workbenches, you need well-tuned hand tools because bad tools are worse than useless. Many crafters recommend the Old tools brand as the most productive tools.

You have wide variety of choices over color, wood, size, length, trims, vises, etc. This is one great opportunity for you to be creative. Thinking about how to design the workbench is probably the hardest and the longest process (because you just have so many choices), and the most enjoyable process to make your ultimate workbench. Or you can just take what experts are recommending for beginners. I personally think first one doesn't have to look good. Most people make a mistake of trying to build their workbench a perfect one. Making a Sturdy Workbench With Workbench Plans. If you are considering building your own workbench, then there are many good workbench plans and designs out there that you can choose from. Some people hesitate for years planning and designing before they actually start building their own workbench. Luckily for most people, lots of good workbench plans and designs are available on the web and also in books and magazines with detailed instructions, pictures, and diagrams. Even if you don't want to stick with given designs, these workbench plans can help you sort of distill your ideas and looks for your own custom-made workbench. But whatever you do, don't make the same mistake most people make by spending years just thinking about your perfect workbench in your head. Building your ultimate bench in your first try is not only going to take you a long time, but also requires tremendous skill. Just go out there, and work on your first workbench with easier designs. There are hundreds of designs for workbenches, from the Workmate to the classic European bench with a shoulder vise, and many variations between. Then building the second workbench will be a breeze after your practice on the first one with workbench plans, and you will soon be making your own dream workbench.
